Agrifood Systems

A Systems Approach to Achieving Food Security for All

Looking Forward From 80 Years of FAO

27/01/2026

High-Level In-Person Event
Tuesday, 27 January 2026
15.00-16.30 CET
Sheikh Zayed Centre, FAO Headquarters, Rome (Italy)

Rapid and profound changes in the food and agricultural sector in recent years have made transforming agrifood systems an urgent priority. Building on over 80 years of leadership, FAO is committed to advancing this transformation through a systems approach that navigates trade-offs and maximizes co-benefits. This commitment is reflected in FAO Strategic Framework 2022–31, which calls for a strategic, systems-oriented approach across all interventions.

Against this backdrop, FAO’s Agrifood Systems and Food Safety Division (ESF) is convening an event to explore how systems approaches have evolved within the Organization. The discussion will highlight FAO’s growing recognition that achieving food security requires interconnected actions across production, nutrition, environment, livelihoods, and inclusive economic development - principles embodied in FAO’s Four Betters: Better Production, Better Nutrition, a Better Environment, and a Better Life, leaving no one behind.

The event will examine how FAO applies systems approaches in practice, clarify what a systems approach means for the Organization - drawing on the recent publication Transforming Food and Agriculture through a Systems Approach - and consider how to accelerate adoption to drive agrifood systems transformation into the future.

We are pleased to invite colleagues based in Rome to attend in person, fostering exchange, dialogue, and collective learning.
Light refreshments will be provided to participants before and after the event.
