Countdown to 2030: How cities and local governments are driving action to reduce Food Loss and Waste
Organized by: the Food is Never Waste Coalition, co-led by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and World Resources Institute (WRI)
Date and Time: 17 June April from 15.00 to 16.30 CEST (Zoom Webinar)
With 70 percent of the world's food consumed in urban areas, urban and peri‐urban food systems have the power to shape the entire food system of their countries. As hubs of food consumption, innovation, and waste management, cities and towns are important entry points to FLW reduction. At the urban and peri-urban level, there is significant opportunity to measure the levels of FLW and implement targeted interventions to prevent and reduce it, such as food recovery and redistribution, upcycling, composting, urban and peri-urban agriculture, and citizen awareness and behaviour change.
The webinar aims to:
- Raise ambition among cities and sub-national governments to prioritize FLW reduction and prevention at the urban and peri-urban level, as part of commitments and strategies related to food security and nutrition, climate change, waste management, and circular food systems.
- Provide a platform for sharing practical experiences and actionable steps to enhance FLW reduction at urban and peri-urban levels, including creating an enabling policy and financial environment and enhancing coordination of actions between governments at national and sub-national levels.
- Serve as an opportunity for participants to share information about ongoing FLW initiatives, upcoming FLW-related events and publications, and engage with peers experiencing similar challenges.
