Countdown to 2030: Sharing Country Experiences for Delivering Food Loss and Waste Reduction under SDG 12.3.
Organized by: the Food is Never Waste Coalition, co-led by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and World Resources Institute (WRI)
Date and Time: 3 April from 13.00 to 14.30 CEST (Zoom Webinar)
Every year, 13.2 percent of the food produced for human consumption is lost between post-harvest and retail and an additional 1.05 billion tonnes of food is wasted in retail, food service, and households, with households alone discarding more than one billion meals a day. Food loss and waste (FLW) is responsible for 8-10% of global greenhouse gas emissions, contributing significantly to global methane emissions, ecosystem destruction and biodiversity loss. Further, FLW exacerbates inefficiencies in agrifood systems, costing the global economy upwards of USD 1 trillion annually while failing to feed the 733 million people facing hunger worldwide and the 2.8 billion who cannot afford a healthy diet.
The webinar will foster dialogue, strengthen collaboration between countries, and promote knowledge exchange to enhance food loss and waste reduction initiatives. Participants will gain valuable insights from countries that are on track to meet SDG 12.3 - Halve global per capita food waste - as well as those actively advancing towards this goal. Discussions will identify actionable steps and key enabling factors needed to accelerate progress in the next five years.
