Agrifood Systems

South Sudan: Transforming agrifood systems through policy, partnerships and persistence

08/07/2025

In South Sudan, food security isn’t just about growing more- it’s about building better systems. In a new episode of FAO’s Agrifood Talks: Systems, Policies and Progress, two national leaders lay out a roadmap for change: Augustino Atillio, Director General for Planning and Policies at the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries, and Kennedy Kenyi Lodiong, Secretary General of the Association of South Sudan Manufacturers.

Together, they share how targeted policies, inter-ministerial coordination, and public-private collaboration are beginning to reshape the country’s agrifood landscape.

  • From tax reform that levels the playing field for local producers
  • To the creation of a National Food and Nutrition Security Council
  • To a fisheries project linking communities, donors, and markets

The episode dives deep into how systemic change is possible even in fragile settings.
“It’s not enough to develop only policies,” says Augustino. “We have to make sure that these policies are relevant and operational.”

The podcast also explores how vocational education, women-led entrepreneurship, and private sector advocacy are helping drive the shift from humanitarian dependency to sustainable agrifood systems.
