FAO’s new report on transforming agrifood systems, Transforming Food and Agriculture Through a Systems Approach, offers a practical framework for joined-up action.
Right now, many actions are being taken within agrifood systems – for tackling hunger, addressing unhealthy diets, providing decent livelihoods, and protecting the planet. But these efforts don’t always link up.
This means, not only are agrifood systems not delivering on their core purpose – providing enough good, nutritious food for everyone – but actions in one part of a system can cause unintended consequences in another. For example, a push to grow more of a particular crop by using more chemical fertilizer might deplete soil and pollute rivers.
FAO’s new report offers policymakers and practitioners a practical guide for how to build bridges between existing actions to deliver impact more effectively and efficiently, recognizing and scaling solutions that are already working, building on local knowledge and innovation.
