In a region grappling with climate challenges and shifting rural economies, agritourism stands out as a beacon of hope. A new technical brief, Sustainable agritourism: an opportunity for agrifood systems transformation in the Mediterranean, co-authored by Maria Partalidou (Aristotle University of Thessaloniki) and Laura De Matteis (FAO, ESF), delves into how agritourism can drive economic vitality, environmental stewardship and social cohesion across the Mediterranean region.

Developed as a contribution to the SFS-MED Platform – a multi-stakeholder initiative advancing sustainable food systems in the Mediterranean – the brief showcases how agritourism integrates agriculture, food, and tourism sectors. It highlights inspiring examples, from pescatourism in Greece to empowering women in Jordan, while presenting actionable recommendations to unlock the full transformative potential of agritourism.

Why does this matter? Because agritourism is not just about farm visits; it is about connecting rural livelihoods with global sustainability goals, safeguarding biodiversity and preserving the Mediterranean’s rich cultural and culinary heritage.

Discover how investing in people, forging partnerships and adopting systemic policies can turn agritourism into a powerful lever for sustainable development.
