THE PROPOSAL

The Hand in Hand Initiative for Gabon is closely aligned with the Economic Transformation Acceleration Plan 2021-2023, which aims at developing agriculture in the country through the establishment of the five Zones with high agricultural productivity (ZAP). The five Zones development is expected to drive the agricultural transformation, including land regulation, eco-responsible development and the grouping of activities (production, processing, logistics, marketing, training and research).

The Hand in Hand Initiative supports investments in ZAP Kango, in the Estuaire province that has been identified as the area with high agricultural potential in particular for cassava, plantain, fisheries, sugar, market gardening, poultry, and pork sectors for food self-sufficiency in basic and processed products.

COMMODITIES AND INTERVENTIONS

Cassava

Cassava is one of the strategic crops of the Government which plans to produce an average of 44,000 tons by 2025 to respond to an ever-increasing consumer demand.

Interventions focus on setting up plots that will allow the quantitative and qualitative increase in production through the multifaceted support to be provided to small national producers, but also putting in place facilitation mechanisms to attract foreign investors. The establishment of processing units in the ZAP Kango will not only diversify products, but also reduce post-harvest losses and restructure the value chain. It is expected that this will substantially contribute to reaching the Government objective of 44,000 tons by 2025.

COMMODITIES AND INTERVENTIONS

Plantain

Plantain is one of the promising agricultural sectors that the Gabonese Government has identified to improve the living conditions of rural populations, create jobs and contribute to the country's food sovereignty. It is expected that by 2025, total banana production will be around 46,438 tons. Achieving this quantified objective requires, among other things, multifaceted support and facilitation to enable small national producers and foreign investors to set up transformational cropping systems. The implementation of the Kango ZAP is an opportunity to materialize this ambition.
