What are the proposals to invest in Guatemala?
For the fifth edition of the HIH Investment Forum, Guatemala is presenting its investment program "Comprehensive Rural Development in the municipalities of Cahabón, Alta Verapaz, and Olopa, Chiquimula." Valued at USD 125.96 million, the program incorporates a water and soil conservation approach based on the Keyline system, alongside catalytic investments within the framework of the government’s “Rutas del Desarrollo” program.
Why are they important?
Investments are focused on prioritized territories identified using the HIH innovative geospatial mapping and based on social criteria (vulnerability and poverty), economic criteria (high agricultural opportunities), and criteria for improvement (currently low production efficiency). On one side, the proposal focuses on specific opportunities that strengthen and drives the economic development of coffee, cocoa and cardamom value chains — incorporating innovation, technology, infrastructure, and production support services. It targets small and medium-sized producers in the municipalities of Cahabón and Olopa, where their potential will be catalysed by improved mobility thanks to government investment in rural roads. On the other side, the program also aims to strengthen the technical and organizational capacities of agricultural producers for the implementation of the Keyline system: a land-use planning that leverages topography to capture, infiltrate, store, and redistribute rainwater; which works with the natural slope and establishes a management pattern that harmonizes with the contours of the land.

Agro-informatics connects information technology with the management, analysis and application of agricultural data to indentify territories with untapped agrifood potential and design more accurate and targeted agrifood interventions. The use of new technologies and techniques in agriculture, such as satellite imagery, remote sensing, and geographic information systems, enable the transformation of data into actionable information.
