Review and Update Meeting for CABI implementation

(Thailand), 16/10/2024 - 17/10/2024

Biosecurity is a cornerstone of livestock production systems to maintain food safety and security, protect the environment, and facilitate continuity of business by protecting animals and animal products. Biosecurity is defined as a set of management and physical measures designed to reduce the risk of introduction, establishment and spread of animal diseases, infections or infestation to, from and within an animal population (WOAH).

African swine fever (ASF), a deadly viral disease affecting domestic and wild pigs has resulted in severe economic consequences to the swine industry of countries in Southeast Asia. With no commercial vaccines available, community engagement and implementing biosecurity measures are essential in preventing and controlling the spread of ASF.

The Community ASF Biosecurity Interventions (CABI) was launched by the FAO and was piloted in a village in the southern island of the Philippines in 2022. The implementation of CABI was based on a community agreeing on a set of biosecurity measures (fencing, footbath, wash area) to be put in place and monitoring how these measures prevent the entry of disease.

CABI has now been expanded to four other countries, namely: Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao People’s Democratic Republic and Thailand. With this expansion, the experiences of each of the countries in the implementation of CABI need to be shared together with the lessons learned. The stories of the impact of CABI in the community need to be documented as well.

Objectives

  1. To share the CABI measures that each country has put in place including the challenges, lessons learned and best practices;
  2. To obtain feedback on the use of the CABI protocol and relevance of the CABI network document;
  3. To develop a CABI documentation plan to capture good biosecurity practice at the local level as well as stories from the field;
  4. To determine the next steps and on the way forward.
