Since its establishment in 1945, FAO has continued in technical leadership to achieve food security. In 2025, FAO will mark its 80thanniversary and celebrate with its 195 members worldwide.
Livestock systems worldwide play a crucial role in converting natural resources into nutritious animal-source foods, bolstering food security, and supporting millions of livelihoods. Recognizing the need for continuous transformation and innovation, FAO continues to promote the exchange of information, dissemination of good practices, and technical cooperation for sustainable livestock production and transformation.
As part of the 80th-anniversary celebration, FAO will introduce a recognition to highlight best practices and outstanding innovations that drive sustainable livestock transformation with a One Health Perspective. By acknowledging pioneering efforts from stakeholders across the livestock sector, this recognition will showcase impactful solutions across value chains and inspire future actions toward integrated, sustainable, and health-oriented livestock systems.
Objectives
This recognition aims to promote successfully implemented best practices and outstanding innovations in sustainable livestock transformation that have shown measurable impact on productivity, environmental outcomes, and animal health and to inspire continued innovation through global stakeholder collaboration in recent decades.
Scope
FAO will recognize practices or solutions that contribute significant advancements or innovations in (1) Sustainable Livestock Transformation, (2) Animal Husbandry, Genetics, Feed and Welfare, (3) One Health, (4) Animal Health, (5) Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Solutions, and (6) Reference Centres across the entire value chain that has been successfully implemented at scale. These may include technologies, systems, practices, or solutions that improve efficiency and support the sustainable transformation of the livestock value chain, encompassing food security enhancement, greenhouse gas mitigation, animal breeding and genomics, animal health and welfare, AMR solutions, animal nutrition and feed, livestock farming systems, post-processing, and policy support.
Eligibility
FAO invites submissions from institutions, international and regional organizations, academic and research institutions, civil society groups, and private sector organizations. Individual applicants, FAO divisions, and FAO employees are not eligible.
Nomination and Selection Process
Nominations should be submitted digitally through the official form, by 15 June 2025.
An international panel of experts appointed by the FAO Animal Health and Production Division (NSA) will evaluate the nominations, particularly for an inclusive and balanced representation across regions, expertise fields, disciplines, and stakeholder groups.
The evaluation will be based on the following criteria:
- Impact and Practical Application: Demonstrated real-world results and effectiveness.
- Innovation and Originality: Novelty and uniqueness of the proposed approach.
- Inclusivity and Social Impact: Contribution to gender equality, youth engagement, and indigenous community involvement.
- Scalability and Replicability: Potential for adoption and implementation in diverse contexts and regions.
Recognition Ceremony
Recipients will receive official recognition at the Global Conference on Sustainable Livestock Transformation 2025 (29 September –1 October), and their representatives will be invited to the World Food Forum (13–17 October ) at FAO headquarters. Please note that FAO will not cover any travel costs for recipients.
