Capacity building
An essential component of FAO’s work is building the capacity of national institutions in food security and nutrition measurement and promoting country ownership of FAO methodologies and standards. With the financial support from partners such as the European Union, FAO is building country-level capacity to use FIES, PoU and food consumption methodologies in national surveys, providing technical assistance to national institutions and conducting regional and country-level workshops.
Building capacity in food security and food and nutrient consumption statistics
In collaboration with national institutions, international organizations, non-governmental organizations and other partners involved in producing and using food security and nutrition statistics, FAO facilitates regional and national trainings aimed at enhancing capacity in producing and reporting food security and nutrition statistics from national-level data. The trainings focus on enhancing skills of staff from ministries and other national, regional and international institutions working on food security and nutrition assessment and monitoring to collect, analyze, interpret and use food security and nutrition indicators, including SDG Indicators 2.1.1 and 2.1.2, producing evidence to guide policies to end hunger and malnutrition. During the trainings, participants are required to prepare data before the sessions, process the data during the workshop and prepare a national food insecurity report afterwards for dissemination, as well as to raise awareness of food security stakeholders.
