This joint FAO–WTO side event will discuss the implementation of the WTO Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies (the Agreement), which entered into force in September 2025. It will provide an overview of the Agreement, the work of the WTO Committee on Fisheries Subsidies and the WTO Fish Fund, and highlight how FAO instruments can support Members in strengthening monitoring, control and surveillance, enhancing transparency, and promoting sustainable fisheries governance. The event will feature presentations by the WTO Secretariat, the WTO Fish Fund and FAO, followed by perspectives from the European Union and Tonga on practical aspects of implementation, as well as the institutional, technical and capacity-related needs required for effective application of the Agreement. A question-and-answer segment will allow COFI delegates to exchange views on challenges and opportunities involved in translating commitments into action. Refreshments will be served after the event.
