Phytosanitary risk management: from theory to action
Hybrid Event, 02/03/2023

In recent years, phytosanitary risks in Latin America and the Caribbean have increased due to the presence of biological threats with a high probability of introduction, establishment and dispersal, the recurrence of highly destructive pests, the increase in the frequency and intensity of adverse climatic events and changes in climate variables that aggravate phytosanitary problems and modify the behavior and geographical distribution of pests, their natural enemies and interactions with host plants.
Organized and collective work, with a solid scientific-technical base, are essential to face these challenges in order to increase national and regional capacities that respond adequately to manage emergencies with a current and integrated approach that minimise their socioeconomic impact. Phytosanitary risk management is the appropriate framework to improve and rigorously validate the effectiveness of existing phytosanitary protocols, the way to reduce risk and ensure better responses to problems affecting food safety and biosecurity.
The self-paced course ''Buenas Prácticas de Gestión del Riesgo Fitosanitario”, to be offered in Spanish in this first phase, is a collaborative effort of FAO's multidisciplinary technical teams in Mesoamerica and Latin America that brings together experiences in plant health and disaster risk management, practices developed in areas of emergency, resilience and animal health by FAO and the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE), as well as the standards and guidelines developed by the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC).
We invite to this webinar all technical teams from National Plant Protection Organizations, private sector, producer associations, academia and international organizations interested in deepening their knowledge on phytosanitary risk reduction and management and improving informed decision making and implementing actions that contribute to improve the response to phytosanitary emergencies.
We will have the opportunity to count with the participation of Raixa Llauger, Agriculture Officer of the FAO Subregional Office in Mesoamerica; Adoniram Sánchez, FAO Subregional Coordinator in Mesoamerica; Raixa Llauger, Agriculture Officer of the FAO Subregional Office in Mesoamerica; Marion Khamis, Risk Management and Resilience Specialist of the FAO Regional Office for LAC; Esther L. Peralta, Plant Health Consultant, FAOSLM; and Keith Cressman, FAO Senior Agricultural Officer, NSP.
The event will be held in Spanish with simultaneous translation into English and can be followed exclusively online.
