The United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution in December 2018 proclai3ming a World Food Safety Day. Starting in 2019, every 7 June will be a time to celebrate the benefits and highlight the importance of safe food. World Food Safety Day is an important way of:

  • Making people aware of food safety issues
  • Demonstrating how to prevent illness through food safety
  • Discussing collaborative approaches to improved food safety across sectors
  • Promoting solutions and ways of being more food safe

We are in the second year of the COVID-19 pandemic. Though the virus is not transmitted by food, the pandemic has highlighted many food-related issues, such as hygiene, antimicrobial resistance, zoonotic diseases, climate change and food fraud and has pinpointed vulnerabilities in food production and control systems, where the dynamics of the global, regional, and local food supply chains are of utmost relevance to preserve livelihoods.

This year, the international and regional organizations FAO, PAHO, IICA, OIRSA, and the CCLAC have joined forces to celebrate WFSD during a 2-day webinar with the goal to bring together the different stakeholders involved in the food chain continuum to share their expertise and experiences.

Topics to be addressed are good practices in primary production, contaminants in food, experience with traceability systems and food handling and foodborne illness, with speakers from countries in the region.

Participants: Open to all countries in the LAC region.
