Background

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) marks 80 years of working towards a more prosperous, sustainable, and just future for all.

On 16 October 2025, FAO celebrates eight decades of commitment to eradicate hunger, transforming agrifood systems, and promoting inclusive and sustainable rural development.

In Latin America and the Caribbean, this commemoration also recognizes decades of joint work with the region’s countries to achieve better production, better nutrition, a better environment, and a better life, leaving no one behind.

Over these eight decades, FAO has supported countries in the region at key moments in their history, providing technical assistance, generating evidence for public policies, building capacities, strengthening institutions, and promoting cooperation among nations.

From the creation of social protection systems to support for family farming and the fight against all forms of malnutrition, shared achievements stand as testimony to the regional and national commitment to food security and sustainable development.

On 2 October, the FAO Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean will commemorate the 80th Anniversary and World Food Day with the opening of a photo exhibition at its premises.
