Background

At the IV Meeting of Presidents of the States Parties to the Amazon Cooperation Treaty held on 8 August 2023, the eight countries issued the Presidential Declaration of Belém. This declaration ratifies the objective of combining the efforts, at the highest level, of their governments in a new common agenda for cooperation in the Amazon, which includes the urgency of addressing the eradication of poverty, the reduction of inequality and the fight against hunger, promoting food and nutrition security and sovereignty.

Recently, the XIV Meeting of ACTO Ministers of Foreign Affairs held on 23 November 2023, adopted the RES/XIV MRE-OTCA/11 regarding the "Promotion of sovereignty and nutritional food security in the Amazon Region", which reaffirms the commitment of Member States to the eradication of hunger and malnutrition in all its forms, in line with the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals.

In this context, FAO and ACTO express the common will to promote effective cooperation that contributes to improving indicators related to hunger and food security of the Amazonian population of ACTO Member Countries (MC). In the same way, to contribute to the reduction of poverty levels, with special attention to the rural population and those in vulnerable situations, and to contribute to the sustainable use of natural resources that are fundamental to the above objectives, contributing to the implementation of the aforementioned common agenda in the Amazon.

In this sense, we are honored to invite you to follow virtually the Panel "Closing the Gaps in Socio-Economic Development: Food and Nutrition Security and Sovereignty in the Amazon Region" and the signing of a Letter of intent for FAO-ACTO cooperation, that will be held on December 7 of this year.
