Preparing for La Niña, advances and challenges to measure its impact on agri-food systems

Virtual Event, 18/04/2024

Background

While still facing the impacts of El Niño weather pattern, Latin America's agrifood systems are once again on alert: La Niña could be present in the region in the second half of 2024. This alert is a call to better understand this climatic phenomenon and take actions to better anticipate, mitigate and be prepared to respond accordingly.

Strengthening capacities for impact assessment by taking advantage of the latest technological and methodological developments and innovations is an important step in these preparations. In this webinar we will learn about the progress made by FAO, governments and civil society in this area. What systems and tools are being used to assess the impacts of shocks and disasters on agri-food systems? What information are we collecting? How can we use it to reduce the risk that La Niña could bring?

These and other questions will be addressed by a panel of experts in this webinar, which is part of the Risk Management and Resilience in Agriculture Series, held by the FAO Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean in the framework of its programme of knowledge management on resilience and emergencies in agri-food systems.

The event will be honoured by the presence of Yolanda González, from the International Centre for El Niño Research (CIIFEN); Zehra Zeidi, from FAO headquarters; Juan Tribín Rivera, from FAO Colombia; María Vera Máximo, from Acción contra el Hambre; Deborah Daniels-Williams, from the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Fisheries and Rural Transformation in St. Vincent and the Grenadines; and Jaime Letelier, from the Instituto de Fomento Pesquero  (IFOP) of the Government of Chile. The event will be moderated by Marion Khamis, FAO Risk Management and Resilience Specialist for Latin America.
