FAO Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean

First session of the 2026 Interregional Dialogues on Family Farming

Brasília (Brazil), Hybrid Event, 22/06/2026 - 24/06/2026

Background

Despite its fundamental role in food production, family farming faces significant challenges that limit the development of this sector, which represents 81.4% of agricultural holdings in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Within the framework of the Regional Technical Platform for Family Farming, the "Interregional Dialogues for Family Farming" have been promoted since 2025 as an opportunity to foster the exchange of innovative solutions and experiences among countries worldwide, emphasizing priority issues for strengthening the sector and collectively building alternatives.

For the second edition of the Interregional Dialogues, the main focus of the debate will be access to land for family farming and land tenure governance.

Tenure insecurity, land concentration, and barriers to access—especially for women and youth—along with weaknesses in governance, limit investment, sustainability, and the exercise of rights in family farming. These problems are exacerbated by climate change, urbanization, and increasing pressure on land and natural resources.

This theme is fully aligned with the United Nations Decade of Family Farming (UNDFF) 2019-2028, which recognizes that access to productive resources, particularly land and tenure security, is an essential pillar for strengthening this sector and transforming agrifood systems, as well as with the Voluntary Guidelines on the Responsible Governance of Tenure (VGGT).

The second edition of the dialogues will be supported by the Government of Brazil, through the National Institute for Colonization and Agrarian Reform (INCRA) and the Brazilian Cooperation Agency of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (ABC/MRE), under the Brazil-FAO South-South Cooperation Program.

First session

The first session of the 2026 Interregional Dialogues on Family Farming will be held from June 22 to 24 in Brasilia, Brazil.
