Background
The Meeting of Ministers of Agriculture of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) 2025 will take place on February 3, 2025, in Comayagua, Honduras. This event serves as a platform for dialogue to advance regional cooperation and reinforce commitments related to the CELAC Plan for food security, nutrition and the eradication of hunger 2030 (CELAC Plan FNS 2030).
The update process of the CELAC Plan FSN 2030 was established upon in December 2022 during the Meeting of Ministers of Agriculture in Buenos Aires, where 17 high-level CELAC authorities participated.
This Plan was approved by Heads of State and Government during the VIII CELAC Summit held on March 1, 2024, in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, this reinforces the region’s commitment to building more inclusive, efficient, resilient, and sustainable agrifood systems, directly contributing to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 2 (SDG 2) of the 2030 Agenda.
Participants
The meeting will bring together Ministers of Agriculture from CELAC member countries, as well as representatives from international organizations.
The FAO provides technical assistance to the Pro Tempore Presidency of CELAC, supporting collective efforts to strengthen regional cooperation in food security and better nutrition.
Objectives of the Meeting
The Meeting of Ministers of Agriculture of CELAC 2025 aims to:
- Review regional progress under Honduras' Pro Tempore Presidency regarding the implementation of the 2030 CELAC FSN Plan.
- Strengthen the commitment of CELAC member countries to implement the CELAC Plan FNS 2030, aligning with international initiatives such as the Food Security and Nutrition Policy of Central America and the Dominican Republic 2012-2032 (POLSAN), the 25X25 Initiative of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), and the G20 Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty.
- Establish guidelines for the monitoring and evaluation of the plan, as well as for the planning of specific actions in the coming years.
CELAC Plan FNS 2030
The CELAC Plan FNS 2030 provides guidelines to assist countries in implementing specific actions to combat hunger and malnutrition, tailored to the particularities of local contexts.
This document is structured around four fundamental pillars:
- Legal and institutional frameworks: Promoting macroeconomic policies and legal frameworks that reduce inequalities and guarantee the right to adequate food.
- Sustainable production and supply chains: Implementing measures to strengthen access to nutritious food through sustainable supply chains.
- Affordability and consumption of healthy diets: Ensuring that everyone can economically access a healthy and balanced diet.
- Resilience and sustainability of agrifood systems: Encouraging climate-resilient systems, with a focus on biodiversity protection and the sustainable use of natural resources.
