FAO Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean

Second Edition of the Interregional Dialogues on Family Farming | Session 3

Cairo (Egypt), Hybrid Event, 04/11/2026 - 05/11/2026

Background

Secure land tenure and responsible governance are essential for strengthening family farming, supporting rural livelihoods, and transforming agrifood systems. However, challenges such as tenure insecurity, land fragmentation, barriers faced by women and youth, conflicts, and climate-related pressures continue to limit the productive potential and resilience of family farmers.

In response to these challenges, responsible land tenure governance has become a key strategic factor for multiple global agendas. To contribute to this agenda, Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Government of Brazil, through the Brazilian Cooperation Agency of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (ABC/MRE), have been promoting the Interregional Dialogues on Family Farming since 2025, as part of the Brazil-FAO Tritaleral South-South Cooperation Programme.

Facilitated through the Regional Technical Platform for Family Farming, these dialogues provide an opportunity to foster the exchange of innovative solutions and experiences among countries worldwide, focusing on priority issues for strengthening the sector and collectively developing alternatives approaches.

Third session of the interregional dialogues

As part of this process, and following up on the first interregional dialogue held in Cairo, Egypt, in July 2025, FAO regional offices for Latin America and the Caribbean and for the Near East and North Africa will organize a new session focused on equitable access to land and responsible tenure governance, in line with the United Nations Decade of Family Farming (2019–2028) and the Voluntary Guidelines on the Responsible Governance of Tenure of Land, Fisheries and Forests in the Context of National Food Security.

The outcomes of this meeting will contribute to the second Global Forum on Policy Solutions for Family Farming, scheduled to take place on November 24–25, 2026, at FAO headquarters in Rome.

Session Objectives
  • Exchange experiences and identify policy solutions that strengthen land governance and promote equitable access to land for family farmers.
  • Explore innovative approaches to land governance, resilient tenure systems in fragile and climate-vulnerable contexts, access to land for women and youth, and sustainable management of natural resources.
  • Strengthen interregional learning and opportunities for South-South and triangular cooperation.
Target Audience

The dialogue will bring together government representatives, family farming organizations, civil society representatives, and technical experts from the Near East and North Africa and Latin America and the Caribbean.

Broadcast

The event will be held in a hybrid format, with simultaneous interpretation available in Arabic, English, French, Spanish, and Portuguese.
