Amazon week. Sustainable Rural Development and Agri-Food Systems

Background
Within the framework of the Amazon Dialogues held in August 2023 in Belém do Pará (Brazil) – as part of the Summit of Presidents of the Member States of the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (ACTO) – the eight Amazonian member countries of ACTO signed the Belém Declaration.
This declaration reaffirms the commitment to the participation of Amazonian peoples in decisions that affect their territories and highlights the importance of strengthening differentiated public policies and regional cooperation mechanisms. Furthermore, it explicitly recognizes the fundamental role of family farming, food security, and territorial governance as central pillars for preserving the Amazon and improving the quality of life of its inhabitants. These topics were reinforced at the Fifth Meeting of Presidents of the States Parties to the Amazon Cooperation Treaty (ACTO) in Colombia (concluded on August 22, 2025). During this meeting, the leaders approved a declaration reiterating their states' commitment to continuing multilateral cooperation focused on addressing the climate, social, environmental, and economic challenges of the Amazon. They also reaffirmed the importance of integrating scientific and Indigenous knowledge, and, in turn, actions against the climate crisis. They also strengthened dialogue between governments and the peoples who inhabit the Amazon through the Amazon Mechanism for Indigenous Peoples (MAPI).
From September 2 to 4, 2025, the city of Manaus will host a week of high-level strategic meetings dedicated to Food and Nutrition Security (FNS), sustainable development, and regional cooperation. Organized by FAO and the Brazilian government within the framework of the Brazil-FAO International Cooperation Program, the event will bring together national and international authorities, civil society organizations, regional networks, and international agencies around a coordinated agenda that seeks to strengthen integrated action on priority issues for Latin America and the Caribbean, with special emphasis on the Amazon region.
Amazon Week Objectives
- Strengthen South-South Cooperation and multisectoral coordination.
- Promote dialogue on the strategic role of family farming.
- Contribute to inclusive and sustainable territorial policies based on access to land and territorial governance tools.
- Promote differentiated investments and strategic alliances, fostering the development of common work agendas that integrate innovation, the bioeconomy, sustainable agriculture, and food security as pillars for the future of the region
Amazon Week Activities
Date: September 1-4
Objective: To advance the roadmap outlined in Montevideo, consolidating technical and strategic capacities that will enable rural women to have a stronger impact on both COP30 and MERCOSUR's sectoral gender policies.
Date: September 2–4
Objective: To promote regional cooperation among Amazonian countries around an inclusive and sustainable bioeconomy, through a space for technical and political dialogue that promotes the use of sociobiodiversity, territorial equity, and rural transformation in the Amazon.

Objective: To exchange experiences on the role of Amazonian cities and subnational governments and their responsibilities in the urban food agenda. To develop a joint dialogue on common elements and challenges facing agrifood systems in Amazonian cities and the role of governance. To develop a joint roadmap to advance an agenda for Amazonian cities with more efficient, inclusive, resilient, and sustainable agrifood systems.
Date: September 2–4
Objective: To promote dialogue to advance territorial management models that guarantee the right to land and contribute to the conservation of Amazonian ecosystems.
