FAO Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean

Session 3 Investment and Financing for Rural Youth in Family Farming

Virtual Event, 02/07/2026

Background

The Technical Regional Platform for Family Farming, lead by Food and Agriculture Organization for the United Nations (FAO), has promoted, since 2023, the Cycle of Technical Exchanges as a space for dialogue, cooperation and learning between countries in Latin America and the Caribbean and other regions. Following two editions focused on family farming registries and public procurement, a third edition will address a structural and intergenerational challenge that defines the future of agrifood systems: the inclusion and participation of rural youth in family farming.

The first session of this cycle, organized jointly with the Mercosur Specialized Meeting on Family Farming (REAF) and the youth initiative World Food Forum, analyzed the opportunities and challenges for strengthening productivity and improving access to information, financing, and networks through the use of digital technologies and tools. The second session focused on the digital divides and the institutional actions being implemented to expand connectivity, strengthen infrastructure, and promote the digital inclusion of rural youth.

The third session will be dedicated to access to investment and financing for rural youth. It will map the instruments available across the region, exploring their coverage, access conditions, and relevance to the realities of young people engaged in family farming.

Objective
  • Identify the enabling conditions for investment policies to be effective within the framework of youth family farming.
  • Exchange experiences on competitive funds, preferential credit lines, digital financial services, seed capital programs, public guarantees and impact investment mechanisms.
Target Audience

Government representatives, family farming and youth organizations, academic institutions, FAO officials and people interested in learning more about these topics.
