Better production
Latin America and the Caribbean has exceptional biodiversity, which is a strategic ally for global food security. Despite this, challenges such as poverty, hunger and environmental degradation prevail in the region.
Therefore, the environmental, economic, and social dimensions of agricultural production, fisheries, and aquaculture need to be addressed comprehensively. Under the Better Production pillar, FAO aims to support the region's countries in integrating policies, sustainable practices, technologies, and innovations to increase productivity while safeguarding livelihoods and the natural resources that sustain food systems.
Through five priority program areas (innovation for sustainable agricultural production, blue transformation, One Health, equitable access to resources for smallholders and digital agriculture), this pillar focuses its efforts on ensuring sustainable production models through efficient and inclusive supply and value chains, ensuring the resilience and sustainability of food systems under changing climatic and environmental conditions.
Thus, through public policy recommendations, capacity building, and the integration of innovative approaches in project implementation, assistance is provided to countries to move towards more sustainable and resilient production systems, leaving no one behind
