With the support of the Subregional Office for the Caribbean and the Plant Production and Protection Division of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), 13 technical fact sheets were developed on adapted technologies and practices to improve crop management. These technologies and practices increase the efficiency of limited natural resources, such as water and land, nutrients and labor, while promoting the local production of high-value and nutritious horticultural crops. This contributes to job creation, expanded business opportunities, reduced imports, and enhanced food security.
The fact sheets have been designed to provide practical information and technological solutions addressing the factors that affect production, including climate, soil, nutrients, water, pests and diseases, as well as cultural practices for the effective production of horticultural crops under different production systems.
They also provide guidance on the key aspects that should be considered when designing horticultural production systems to achieve optimization, standardization, and adaptation to local conditions within the context of small and medium scale farmers. Their aim is to support the production of horticultural crops with higher quality, enhanced food safety, improved yields, and greater profitability, while ensuring the sustainable use of natural resources.
