Emergency Centre for Transboundary Animal Diseases (ECTAD)
Asia and the Pacific Region

Through ECTAD, FAO builds animal health capacity to prevent, detect and respond to zoonotic and non-zoonotic disease outbreaks at source. FAO ECTAD plays a critical role in protecting people and animals from animal disease threats.

Key facts
Zoonotic diseases

Zoonotic diseases, or zoonoses, are diseases shared between animals–including livestock, wildlife and pets–and people. Zoonotic diseases are commonly spread at the human-animal-environment interface – where people and animals interact with each other in their shared environment (FAO, OIE and WHO, 2019).

Dangerous pathogens

Approximately 70 percent of the pathogens causing emerging infectious diseases today are zoonotic, emerging from both wildlife and livestock.

Animal diseases pose a risk

Animal diseases present a significant risk to public health and can cause substantial harm to the livestock and poultry sectors, jeopardizing our food safety and security. Early prevention, detection and rapid response are essential for addressing these threats effectively.

ASF: Protect wild pigs, Protect all pigs!

African swine fever (ASF) is a highly contagious viral disease affecting domestic and wild pigs, with a high mortality rate and severe economic and social impacts on pig farmers and rural communities. Recently, ASF has spread to new regions, including Asia, posing a significant concern for the global pig industry. Wild pigs are crucial reservoirs of ASF in many countries, making control of these populations vital to preventing further spread.

The video outlines how to protect wild pigs from ASF, consequently safeguarding domestic pigs. Approximately 11 species of wild pigs in Asia and the Pacific are at risk from ASF.
