Antibiotic use in horticulture and crop production in India

Since the 1950s, antibiotics have been used to control bacterial diseases in high-value crops, now in more than 39 countries. In India, rising misuse in agriculture poses public health risks, especially antimicrobial resistance (AMR). This policy brief reviews antibiotics used, regulatory gaps, and health/environment impacts, compares use across sectors, and recommends actions to curb misuse and slow AMR.
Avian influenza risk of upsurge and regional spread through increased poultry trade before and during Lunar New Year festivities in Asia

Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) can result in major losses for the poultry industry, particularly impacting vulnerable small-scale producers. Some avian influenza virus subtypes have the potential to spread between birds and humans. In response, the FAO has urged heightened vigilance and preparedness for avian influenza during the traditional New Year festivities in January 2025.

This report highlights the findings of an evaluation of Pakistan’s animal disease surveillance system in Pakistan in August 2023, using FAO’s Surveillance Evaluation Tool (SET), evaluates animal disease surveillance capacities in Pakistan, conducted in August 2023. Strengths and gaps are identified based on interviews with stakeholders at national, intermediate and field levels and a thorough review of documentation related to animal disease surveillance in the country.

To support countries in their endeavor to manage the ASF risk, the FAO, in collaboration with the WOAH, has brought together ASF experts, risk managers, and private sector representatives to provide latest scientific knowledge and consult on recommendations for updated, more effective and sustainable disease management approaches. The consultation was held in FAO HQ in Rome on 12-14 December 2023 and was attended by more than 200 participants in person and online.

This meeting was held to strengthen JRA using a One Health approach in the WHO South-East Asia Region.
