In 2024, Colombia made significant strides in improving conditions for vulnerable populations and reducing violence. Despite these efforts, the country continues to face severe challenges from armed conflict and climate-related disasters. Extreme weather events, particularly those associated with El Niño and La Niña, have severely impacted food security, leaving millions at risk.

In response, FAO’s Emergency and Resilience Programme adopts innovative approaches such as anticipatory action and preparedness tailored for small-scale farmers and ethnic communities. These initiatives strengthen community capacities to adapt to climate variability, safeguard livelihoods, and promote economic justice while ensuring food access as a basic human right. By empowering farmers to produce food in emergency contexts and integrating them into local markets, the programme enhances resilience in vulnerable areas

At the same time, FAO works closely with the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to incorporate these practices into public policy frameworks and government initiatives.

FAO also fosters social cohesion through participatory community training programmes. It has established Community Demonstration and Production Centers (CDCs) to teach agroecological, sustainable, and low-impact agricultural practices. These adaptive approaches increase productivity, even under drought conditions. Additionally, FAO’s support for livestock health and investments in rehabilitating water infrastructure have boosted animal productivity and enabled families to double their harvests, with new irrigation systems supporting year-round farming.

These efforts aim to build resilience and stability across Colombia, providing essential support to communities grappling with complex environmental and socio-economic challenges.
