FAO-IPPC regional workshop 2025 for the Near East and North Africa (NENA) region

Background

The 2025 Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) - International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) regional workshop annual meeting for the Near East and North Africa (NENA) region will be organized in collaboration with the FAO Regional and Subregional Offices for the Near East and North Africa, the Near East Plant Protection Organization (NEPPO), and the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Water Resources of the Sultanate of Oman. The workshop will be held in person from 8 to 11 September 2025 in Salalah, Oman, under the theme:

🌿 “The importance of plant health in One Health” 🌿

This regional event is a key annual platform that brings together representatives of the national plant protection organizations (NPPOs), regional and international experts, and IPPC stakeholders. The workshop focuses on supporting the implementation of the IPPC and strengthening regional collaboration in plant health within the One Health framework.

Objectives

• Facilitate regional dialogue and exchange on draft International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures (ISPMs) under consultation.
• Provide updates on IPPC governance, standard setting, implementation, and capacity development activities.
• Discuss regional challenges, priorities, and strategic actions for enhanced implementation of the IPPC and phytosanitary measures.
• Showcase national and regional initiatives in plant health under the One Health approach (The NENA plant health strategy)

Workshop highlights

• High-level opening session with representatives from the FAO, IPPC Secretariat, NEPPO, and the host country.
• Review and discussion of ISPMs under first and second consultations.
• Interactive sessions on implementation tools, ePhyto certification, pest surveillance systems, and global coordination initiatives.

• Special focus on climate change, safe trade, and regional diagnostic and laboratory networks.
• Technical field visit in Salalah (10 September 2025).
