The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Regional Office for the Near East and North Africa (RNE) marked the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste (IDAFLW) 2025 on 23 October 2025 with a hybrid event held in Cairo under the global theme “365 Days of Action.” The event brought together representatives from governments, the League of Arab States (LAS), regional organizations, academia, and the private sector to exchange experiences and discuss innovative approaches to reduce food loss and waste in the region.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the United Nations Satellite Centre (UNOSAT) today released new geospatial analysis revealing extensive and worsening damage to the agricultural sector in the Gaza Strip. The findings show widespread destruction of croplandgreenhousesirrigation wells, and other agricultural infrastructure – assets essential for food production and livelihoods.  Overall, Gaza’s agricultural base has been devastated, but the current ceasefire has created a narrow and time-sensitive opening to begin restoring food production and livelihoods.

At least 5 000 smallholder farmers in the West Bank will soon receive real-time weather alerts directly to their smartphone as part of a climate-smart initiative from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). 

Funded by the Green Climate Fund (GCF), the initiative is the first localized real-time weather alert system in the Near East and North Africa (NENA) region. It is implemented in partnership with the Palestinian Ministry of Agriculture (MoA), the Environment Quality Authority (EQA) and the Palestinian Meteorological Department (PMD).

This new project will strengthen the technical, entrepreneurial, and financial capacities of young agripreneurs, while contributing to the creation of sustainable and decent jobs. Livestock is a cornerstone of Egypt’s agriculture, providing essential nutrition and livelihoods for millions of households. The sector contributes 37.5 percent of agricultural production value, supports 1.8 million families, and produces around 6 million tonnes of milk and 0.5 million tonnes of meat each year. Beyond food security, livestock contributes about 11 percent of Egypt’s GDP, making it a vital driver of the economy.

Delegates from across the Near East region convened in Muscat, Oman, from 28 September to 02 October 2025 for the 12th Session of the FAO/WHO Coordinating Committee for the Near East (CCNE12), the first time in more than a decade that the Committee met within the region. Hosted by the Government of the Sultanate of Oman, the meeting marked a renewed commitment to advancing food safety, harmonizing regional standards, and strengthening cooperation among Member Countries.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Programme Director in Saudi Arabia, Dr. Nizar Haddad was a keynote speaker in the celebration event of the General Food Security Authority (GFSA) event held on 29 September 2025, to launch the National Platform for Reducing Food Loss and Waste, in conjunction with the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste.
