FAO and Oman sign a framework agreement for a strategic partnership with South-South and Triangular Cooperation approach

24 November 2022, Muscat - The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and Oman, represented by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries Wealth and Water Resources, an agreement to implement the strategic partnership program under the South-South and triangular cooperation modality.to boost the transformation of agrifood systems, improve food security and support the global efforts towards the 2030 Sustainable Agenda.
The agreement was signed by the Director-General of FAO, Qu Dongyu and the Omani Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries Wealth & Water Resources, HE Dr. Saoud Bin Hamood Al-Habsi.
This partnership aims at enhancing the cooperation between FAO & The Sultanate of Oman in activities that are in line with FAO’s mandate, and the Sultanate's agenda in achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Furthermore, the agreement aims to set general terms and conditions with regards to the Government of Oman’s contributions to FAO, in the form of providing technical and scientific expertise in line with “South-South and Triangular Cooperation” modality.
The FAO-Director General expressed his appreciation to the Omani government’s efforts and contributions in realizing the sustainable development of agriculture in Sultanate and pledged the commitment of FAO in helping the country achieve the 2030 agenda for Sustainable Development.
Through this partnership, FAO has outlined its support to the Sultanate of Oman through a diversified portfolio of projects under its ‘Umbrella Programme, in line with the FAO Country Programming Framework in Oman (2018-2022) and “Oman Vision 2040”. This includes various programs and projects that focus on three priority areas: Enhancing social capacities, economic competitiveness and innovations for inclusive and efficient value chains in agriculture and fisheries; Increase Environmental Sustainability and Resilience of the Agriculture and Fisheries Sector; and strengthening an enabling environment for food system transformation.
It is worth mentioning that the signature of the South-South and Triangular Cooperation took place during the FAO’s Director General visit to Oman during 23-25 November, which also encompasses his participation in the 3rd Global High-level Ministerial Conference on Antimicrobial Resistance.
As a valued strategic partner of the Sultanate of Oman, FAO is committed to serving the interests of the country by providing policy and technical support through various projects to support the Omani government’s efforts in fostering sustainable food and agricultural systems.
