FAO implements a Regional Water Accounting Training to water practitioners from the NENA region

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in collaboration with IHE Delft Water Education Institute for Water Education (IHE Delft) have implemented a Regional Water Accounting training to 60 practitioners from the Near East and North Africa (NENA) region from the 11th to the 13th of May 2022. The training which took place in Alexandria, Egypt over three days, aimed to review the learning status of the regional training on advanced water accounting that took place and discuss findings and tools with a broader group of stakeholders interested in its institutionalization in some NENA countries.
Between 2020 and 2022, a specialized Regional Training Program has been implemented by IHE Delft in a series of seven activities:
- Foundational capacity development;
- Organization of a web=based platform to host the training program;
- Basics on advanced water accounting training;
- Distance coaching - specialized assignments
- Specialized training in advanced water accounting;
- Distance coaching – development of individual water accounting assessments;
- Final workshop and regional training.
These activities built on earlier courses and experiences gained during the earlier WA cycle for conducting water accounting analyses, and then further developed the participants’ abilities with courses that teach advanced skills and specific technical knowledge about water accounting. The participants were also provided distance coaching, where they learned from and worked with the water accounting specialists on specific skill-building assignments. The final activity which is the Regional Water Accounting training aimed to review the learning status of the regional training on advanced water accounting that took place and discuss findings and tools with a broader group of stakeholders interested in its institutionalization in some NENA countries.
The training included theoretical presentations from the eight project countries: Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Iran, Lebanon, Morocco, Tunisia and Palestine, which presented an overview of project implementation and achievements with details on the Water accounting component & prospects. The training also included different working groups with IHE Delft coaches on tools/approaches, enabling all the participants to meet with the coaches and have an in-depth discussion on a range of tools.
This training is implemented under the regional project “Implementing the 2030 Agenda for water efficiency/productivity and water sustainability in NENA countries”. This project is funded by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency.
