FAO joins Arab Sustainable Development Week

20 November 2018, Cairo, Egypt – The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has joined the Arab Sustainable Development Week aiming at strengthen its partnership with governments of Arab countries to achieve the sustainable development goals (SDGs).
FAO took part in a number of sessions during the conference, highlighting the need to achieve zero hunger, especially in conflict related countries, as well as the importance of effective partnerships that enhance the achievement of all the SDGs.
“Wars are the main driver of hunger in the world, especially in the Arab region,” said Abdessalam Ould Ahmed, FAO Assistant Director-General and Regional Representative for the Near East and North Africa, during the conference.
“A shift in policies is needed if we are to achieve zero hunger in a foreseeable future,” he added.
This year’s Arab Sustainable Development Week took place on 19-22 November 2018 under the patronage of Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah Al-Sisi at the League of Arab States (LAS).
The conference comes in pursuit of strengthening partnerships between LAS and its partners, especially United Nations agencies, to achieve the SDGs in the region.
