FAO trains water experts from Jordan and Palestine on water governance

6 April 2021, Jordan – The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in collaboration with the International Water Management Institute (IWMI) conducted a one-day national virtual training under the title “Water Governance Analysis” for water experts in Jordan and Palestine. The training aimed at strengthening the capacities and knowledge of selected government and non-governmental actors in Jordan and Palestine who are going to support the water governance/auditing process. The overall objective of the training was to enable the participants to understand how to implement water auditing and how to apply the four steps of water governance analysis.

The training introduced the water governance processes, presented case studies and involved group discussions. Forty-two national experts which included around 17 women, from multiple Jordanian and Palestinian national institutions attended the training, whom represented the diversity of the water-agriculture-environmental issues. The participants from Jordan were from the Ministry of Water and Irrigation; the Ministry of Agriculture; the National Agricultural Research Center; Jordan Valley Authority; Water Authority of Jordan; Department of Statistics; Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation; and the University of Jordan. Whereas, the participants from Palestine were from the Ministry of Agriculture and the Palestinian Water Authority.

Topics in the training included:

  • Understanding the terminology, definitions and key concepts of water auditing (Water Governance Analysis);
  • Understanding the value and importance of water auditing;
  • Recognizing the four phases of water auditing;
  • And understanding the role of the national agency’s rep and other agencies role and perspectives in supporting the water auditing process.

This activity is implemented under the regional project “Implementing the 2030 Agenda for water efficiency/productivity and water sustainability in NENA countries” directly under the Regional Water Scarcity Initiative. This project is funded by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency.
