FAO concludes second demonstration trial of Micron U16 Drone for Desert Locust Control in Oman

05/05/2025, Muscat

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), represented by the Commission for Controlling the Desert Locust in the Central Region and the Commission for Controlling the Desert Locust in the Western Region, in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources of the Sultanate of Oman, concluded the second demonstration trial of the Micron Spray Drone for ultra-low volume (ULV) pesticide application in desert locust control.

The trial was conducted from 27 April to 1 May 2025 in selected areas across Oman, with the participation of national locust control teams, technical experts from the FAO, and representatives from Micron Group. The aim was to evaluate the operational efficiency, precision, and environmental safety of drone-based spraying technology under real field conditions.

Initial results confirmed the drone’s high effectiveness in achieving precise pesticide application, particularly in rugged areas that are difficult to access with conventional methods, reinforcing its potential use in future locust control programs across the region.

“It is my great pleasure to express my deep appreciation and pride in the successful completion of the second trial of the Micron U16 drone in the Sultanate of Oman. This trial marks a significant step forward in adopting modern and effective technologies for desert locust control. The trial demonstrated a high level of coordination between national and international partners and highlighted the great potential of this technology to enhance control efficiency while reducing environmental impact compared to traditional methods,” Dr. Mamoun Al-Sarai Al-Alawi, Executive Secretary of the Commission for Controlling the Desert Locust in the Central Region at FAO commented.

“We hope that the results of this trial will support decision-makers in expanding the use of drones as a strategic tool in preparedness and response efforts to desert locust outbreaks—ultimately contributing to food security and environmental sustainability across our region,” he added.

This trial builds on the success of the first demonstration held in Mauritania in December 2024, as part of ongoing efforts by the FAO and its regional commissions to strengthen early response capabilities and integrate innovative, sustainable technologies into locust management programs, safeguarding food security and livelihoods in countries vulnerable to desert locust threats.

The FAO expressed its gratitude to the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources of the Sultanate of Oman for its strong cooperation and technical support, which were instrumental in the success of this important trial.
