Algeria - The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in Algeria joined the world in celebrating World Bee Day, in collaboration with the Embassies of the Netherlands and Slovenia, as well as the European Union, reaffirming its commitment to protecting pollinators and promoting sustainable agriculture.
“Bees are more than just pollinators—they are indicators of a healthy environment and resilient agricultural systems,” said AbdulHakim Elwaer, FAO Assistant Director- General and Regional Representative for the Near East and North Africa during the event.
“Protecting bees means protecting our future. Collaboration at all levels is essential to ensure that pollinators continue to support food production and biodiversity for generations to come,” he added.
The event brought together beekeeping experts, environmental specialists, and international partners to spotlight the indispensable role of bees in maintaining ecosystem balance and ensuring food security. Experts underscored how bees contribute to the health of the food chain by supporting crop pollination and biodiversity.
The event also highlighted the key role of Algerian women and their strong engagement in environmental protection through the work of female beekeepers and bee experts.
The celebration served as a platform for knowledge exchange, where expert beekeepers and environmental advocates shared insights, best practices, and innovative approaches to strengthen collaboration for biodiversity conservation and sustainable farming systems.
During the event, FAO engaged the Muslim Algerian Scouts in an awareness-raising activity, hosted at the residence of the Slovenian Ambassador. An expert presentation highlighted the importance of bees for biodiversity and food systems. The scouts also took part in a seed-planting competition initiated by the Slovenian Embassy, promoting youth involvement in environmental stewardship. Once the flowers bloom, the children will share photos and take part in a contest organized by the Slovenian Embassy for the most beautiful flower. The children also took part in a coloring activity focused on beekeeping, bees, and biodiversity, helping them explore the world of apiculture.
This World Bee Day event reinforced the importance of cross-sectoral collaboration in promoting pollinator health and advancing global efforts toward sustainable agriculture and ecosystem preservation.
