With deep sadness, we mourn the passing of Dalia Abulfotuh, Economist at FAO’s Regional Office for the Near East and North Africa.

Dalia dedicated her career to building more inclusive, resilient, and sustainable agrifood systems. She worked tirelessly to support rural communities, empower young people, and expand social protection so that no one is left behind.

Her journey combined academic excellence with heartfelt commitment. With a background in political economy and environment and development, she brought both rigor and compassion to everything she did.

At FAO, she played a central role in shaping work on youth employment, territorial development, and rural transformation. Her insights and leadership influenced policies and initiatives that continue to improve lives across the region.

Colleagues remember Dalia not only for her professional brilliance, but also for her kindness, warmth, and generosity. She inspired those around her with her vision, her dedication, and her belief in the power of people to change their futures.

Her passing is a profound loss for FAO and for all who had the privilege to know and work with her. Yet her legacy lives on — in the projects she advanced, the ideas she championed, and the many lives she touched.
