The SAFE project focuses on the connection between wildlife trafficking and zoonotic disease transmission with the aim to prevent future pandemics. In line with a One Health approach, aimed at finding the balance between the health of people, animals and ecosystems, SAFE understands that protecting wildlife and preventing wildlife crimes is important to protect human health.

White paper calls for enhanced prevention of zoonotic spillover within the triad of pandemic prevention, preparedness, and response. It advocates for the need to reduce the risk of zoonotic disease spillover at source through improved prevention measures, an approach that is more efficient than relying on disease detection and response.

The SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) pandemic has highlighted the need for improved early detection, risk assessment and warning of events that may have epidemic potential. A coordinated approach across systems aiming to safeguard the health of humans, animals, plants and the environment – a One Health approach – is needed to identify and mitigate the risks from emerging diseases, reduce the impact of infectious diseases and other health threats, and strengthen global health security.

FAO collaborated with the Kenya Zoonotic Disease Unit (ZDU) to conduct a Cost-Effectiveness Analysis and Cost Benefit Analysis of the operationalization of the One Health approach in Kenya. As the world grapples with the complex interplay of zoonotic diseases and the looming specter of Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR), food safety and security, the workshop opened new avenues for collaboration.

FAO and USAID are scaling up efforts to strengthen global animal health security with the aim of protecting human lives and livelihoods while improving agrifood systems and safeguarding the environment. The new funding will assist to implement the Quadripartite One Health Joint Plan of Action (OH-JPA), by enabling countries to sustain, with FAO support, the critical animal health and One Health capabilities developed in over 30 countries in Africa, South Asia and the Pacific, North Africa and the Near East.
