Bioethanol for clean cooking: Opportunities for improving the sustainability of local value chains
Virtual Event, 30/01/2025

Overview
Bioethanol offers a promising option in Africa given that it can be produced from renewable sources that are locally grown in many countries, can generate new income streams for agricultural producers to foster rural economic growth and help reduce countries' dependencies on fuel imports, thereby strengthening energy security in the continent.
Despite this promising outlook, domestic production and adoption of bioethanol for cooking is not feasible nor appropriate in all contexts. This webinar presents lessons learned from stakeholder workshops conducted by FAO in Rwanda and Uganda on common barriers and best practices. A promising case of local bioethanol production from cassava in Kenya will also be presented to show how the development of this sector can align with sustainable development.
The webinar is hosted by the Global Bioenergy Partnership (GBEP) as part of the project "International dialogues on bioethanol as a clean cooking fuel in selected countries in Africa and Asia", funded by the United States Department of Agriculture Foreign Agricultural Service (USDA-FAS). More information and other webinars on this theme can be found on the GBEP website.
