GBEP masterclass on “Sustainable bioenergy solutions for just and inclusive transitions” for high-school students

In preparation for the World Food Forum (WFF), GBEP led a CultivatED live masterclass on “Sustainable bioenergy solutions for just and inclusive transitions” for high-school students.
The session was part of a week-long series of masterclasses, organized by the WFF Global Action Initiative (Youth Initiative), which connect FAO experts with young people to foster learning and engagement.
Using a mix of presentations and games, the masterclass explored sustainable bioenergy in the context of agrifood systems, its role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and the interconnections between climate change, energy and food security.
Second GBEP Bioenergy Youth Day

The 2nd GBEP Bioenergy Youth Day, the first in Africa, feature a dynamic mix of educational and hands-on training activities tailored for high school and university students, and young practitioners.
About 100 participants, welcomed by the Hon. Balaam Barugahara Ateenyi, Minister of Youth and Children Affairs, had the opportunity to learn from global experts and bioenergy innovators, with a special focus on Africa and inclusivity.
The program was designed to inspire and equip the next generation of bioenergy leaders, culminating in the presentation of the 2025 GBEP Youth Award that recognizes outstanding contributions from young innovators in the field. This winner, Suleiman Usman Yunusa, Ahmadu Bello University, Nigeria, was announced by UNICEF representative in Uganda, Dr. Robin Nardy.
Interactive learning session with high school students

GBEP, in collaboration with the Youth and United Nations Global Alliance (YUNGA), hosted an interactive learning session for 25 high school students to raise awareness on sustainable development, food security, climate change, and renewable energy. Using visual presentations, demonstrations, and quizzes, the learning session provided a unique and engaging experience for the students, offering practical insights on how they can contribute to addressing the climate crisis. The initiative aimed to inspire the younger generation to take an active role in advocating for renewable energy and climate action. Read the full story.
Discovery Station at the World Food Forum Youth Assembly

At the YUNGA School Assembly during the World Food Forum 2023 in Rome, GBEP organized a Discovery Station on Energy. Focusing on ''alternatives to fuelwood to reduce pressure on forest resources", students from national and international schools gained hands-on experience with bioenergy benefits and production pathways. They learned about feedstocks and energy technologies, and participated to a microgasifier demonstration and a fun card game. Participants received an energy stamp on their YUNGA passport.
YUNGA Energy Challenge Badge Bioenergy Supplement
GBEP has collaborated with the Youth and United Nations Global Alliance (YUNGA) to produce a Bioenergy Supplement to the YUNGA Energy Challenge Badge. As part of the Energy Challenge Badge, young people can now learn specifically about bioenergy: how we produce and use it, and how we can make sure it is sustainable.
This booklet can be used on its own or in combination with the Energy Challenge Badge to create a tailored curriculum on energy and bioenergy. The Badge is suitable for young people aged 5-16.
World Food Forum Energy Lab
23 February 2022
The Energy Lab, held over Zoom with two youth groups from UAE and Pakistan, introduced the basic facts about energy and explored how we can produce and use renewable energy in a better way for people and the planet. The youth, aged 10-13 years, learned about the different types of renewable energy and how their use differs from country to country. The interactive activities during the Lab allowed students to investigate the actions we can take to be more sustainable and tackle climate change through our everyday choices.
Lecture on “Sustainable bioenergy in national and international contexts”

The GBEP Secretariat gave a lecture on the GBEP programme of work and experiences at the University course on Energy Economics, Department of Energy, at the Polytechnic University of Turin.
