
World Food Day celebrations in Saudi Arabia highlight water scarcity and sustainable agriculture

On the occasion of World Food Day 2023, the Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture of Saudi Arabia, in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), organized a grand celebration in Hail. The event was held under the auspices of His Royal Highness Prince Abdulaziz bin Saad bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, the Prince of Hail. This celebration was made possible with the support of partners, including Hail Region Municipality, Almarai, National Seeds Agricultural Production Company (NSPC), LEHA Agriculture, and JAL and also served as the inauguration of the agricultural extension convoy activities in the region, known as the "القافلة_الزراعية_الإرشادية" (Agricultural Extension Convoy) and Pomegranate and Figs Festival.

Biodiversity for food and agriculture: the foundation of our food systems

The loss of biodiversity is seriously undermining our ability to feed and nourish an ever-growing global population. Biodiversity includes not only the plants and animals that we eat and that provide feed, fuel and fibre. Biodiversity for food and agriculture also includes the myriad of organisms that support food production: The beetles, worms and micro-organisms that keep soils fertile; the insects and birds that pollinate our crops and keep pests in check, the animals and plants that nourish the fish we catch and the trees and plants that filter our water and regulate our climate.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the International Atomic Energy Agency, in cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture in Jordan launched today the first day of the Regional Laboratory Training within the framework of “Implementation of the Peste des petits ruminants (PPR) Global Eradication Programme (PPR GEP II) in Jordan, including assessment of risks, distribution and establishment of a reliable surveillance system”. Funded by the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA).
