Aquatic ecosystem conservation and the sustainable development approach to inland fisheries management

A regional workshop on aquatic ecosystem conservation for policymakers, researchers and resource managers from beneficiary countries in Eastern and Central Europe and the Balkans.

FAO invites participants interested in cutting-edge ecosystem science for improvement of understanding of how human and natural stressors affect aquatic ecosystems and how to address these challenges through coordinated and multidisciplinary data collection, synthesis and analysis, predictions and decision-support tools generated from multi-agency and international partnerships for shared inland waterbodies.

Objective: Provide essential knowledge and understanding of freshwater conservation, taking into consideration European aquatic ecosystem challenges and opportunities for inland capture and sport fisheries, biodiversity, and aquatic ecosystem conservation.

Europe’s aquatic resources are increasingly affected by stressors that interact to affect both humans and aquatic ecosystems in complex ways. These stressors include energy development, dams and other barriers to fish migration; water removal for domestic, industrial, and agricultural use; invasive species and disease; pollution; land management activities, such as timber harvest, grazing, and development; and climate induced rising water temperatures and decreasing flows, drought, and flooding.
