Biodiversity & genetic resources conservation in agriculture and forestry workshop

FAO and the Czech Government is organizing a 3-day workshop to share experience and good practices in the conservation, assessment and use of genetic resources, with special attention to safeguarding biodiversity and genetic resources important for food, agriculture and forestry. Experts dealing with agricultural plant, animal and forest genetic resources for food and agricultural conservation – both in situ and ex situ, and linked to nature conservation – are expected to participate. They will discuss main challenges and opportunities, barriers and drivers for enhanced conservation of biodiversity and genetic resources in diverse natural and socio-economic conditions.

The workshop is fully aligned with the strategic goals of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), specifically with conservation of biodiversity, its sustainable use and access, and the fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from genetic resources. The implementation of the Nagoya Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources and the Fair and Equitable Sharing of Benefits Arising from their Utilization will be addressed during the workshop.

In addition to the CBD goals and commitments, the workshop will address country commitments and obligations under the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture.

The workshop will provide a unique opportunity for knowledge exchange, capacity building and will act as a platform to share experience and views among different stakeholders from the Czech Republic and participants from the Western Balkans, Central Asia and the Caucasus. The workshop will seek opportunities for further joint work and regional cooperation.

The workshop will be held in English and Russian. Simultaneous interpretation will be available.
