FTFP Planning Workshop

Under the FAO – Turkey Forestry Partnership Programme (FTFP), The Ministry of Forestry and Water Affairs of Turkey (MFWA) proposed to support Eritrea, Mauritania and Sudan, in their efforts to combat desertification through the effective implementation of the African Union Flagship programme “Great Green wall for the Sahara and the Sahel initiative” in these countries. A Concept Note has been prepared by FAO and endorsed, on 15 March 2018, by the FTFP Steering Committee, entitled “Boosting Restoration, Income, Development, Generating Ecosystem Services”. The total project budget will reach up to 3.6 million USD, 3 million to be funded under FTFP and the remaining 0.6 million through FAO extra-budgetary resources.

The project overall objective is to improve the condition and productivity of the agrosilvopastoral landscapes affected by desertification, land degradation and drought (DLDD) and the livelihoods of local communities in three Great Green Wall dryland countries.

The proposed project specific objectives are the following:

• to catalyse action, support sustainable management and restoration of dryland forests and agrosilvopastoral systems in three Greta Green Wall countries – Eritrea, Mauritania, Sudan - stimulating production, benefiting livelihoods and generating ecosystem goods and services. 
• to stimulate South-South Cooperation between Turkey and Africa’s Great Green wall and across dryland regions worldwide. 

The project of a duration of 3 years will restore 5,000 ha of degraded lands and expand the implementation of FAO’s innovative restoration approach for the GGW to the three targeted countries.
