Food Systems Talks: Unleashing the potential of environmental sustainability to transform agrifood systems
Hybrid Event, 17/06/2022
To maintain the momentum generated by the UN Food Systems Summit, last year, the Issue-Based Coalition (IBC) on Sustainable Food Systems launches the 2nd Food Systems Talk, as an opportunity to increase awareness on the environmental sustainability side of the agrifood systems transformation, guided by the Summit Action Tracks (particularly Action Track 3 - Boost nature-positive production), to canvas and showcase current thinking on game-changing ideas and opportunities.
Balancing agrifood systems with protecting the natural resource base is an important issue across our region.
The science is clear – we are facing an unprecedented loss of biodiversity, driven by unsustainable changes in how we manage our land and seas. This is not only putting nature at risk, but also our own health and prosperity. The efforts to tighten sustainability requirements in the agrifood systems should be accompanied by policies that help raise standards, in order to avoid the externalization and use of unsustainable practices, to balance agrifood production with environmental sustainability for the future of people and the planet.
Many political initiatives, from the UN Food Systems Summit, EU Green Deal, Farm to Fork Strategy, along with calls from civil society and businesses, are increasingly aligned around calls for a 2030 global goal to halt and reverse biodiversity decline – which many refer to as a goal to become ‘Nature Positive’ by 2030.
The 2nd Food Systems Talk aims at shedding a light on key general opening questions on reverse biodiversity loss, role of regenerative agriculture, climate-smart practices, nature-based solutions and, then, a more in-depth look into organic farming across Europe and Central Asia.
Maxim Vergeichik, Senior Nature Economist at UNDP, hosted the conversation with Iskanderbek Aidaraliev, President of the Federation of Organic Movement of Kyrgyzstan BIO-KG, Founder of the International Federation of Organic Movement IFOAM Euro-Asia.
