Pond aquaculture, intensive fish farming, artificial reproduction, fish genetics and breeding and the conservation of genetic resources

A five-day regional workshop on Pond Aquaculture in Central Europe is jointly organized by FAO and the University of South Bohemia in České Budějovice, from 30 September to 4 October 2019 in Vodňany, Czech Republic. Topics to be presented in this practical training are: intensive fish farming, artificial reproduction, fish genetics and breeding, and the conservation of aquatic genetic resources in inland waters. The workshop is funded by the Ministry of Agriculture of the Czech Republic through a Memorandum of Understanding with FAO Regional Office for Europe and Central Asia (REU). The aim of the workshop is to provide capacity development for beneficiary countries in West Balkans and Caucasus region, namely: Albania, Armenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, Republic of Moldova, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia and Ukraine. Two participants from each country were invited by FAO to attend the training to promote aquaculture development in their countries, including officials from relevant Government agencies, university students, and aquaculture researchers. Expert trainers from the Faculty of Fisheries and Protection of Waters of the University of South Bohemia in České Budějovice will present the latest farming methods and technology for pond aquaculture of fish species relevant for farmers in Europe, as well as share policy-related lessons learned and best practices in conservation of genetic aquatic resources in the Czech Republic.

The University is arranging a full-day field trip for workshop participants on the history and present-day realities of pond aquaculture in Central Europe, including a visit to a functioning fish farm in the Czech Republic.
