Regional Workshop on Safety for Fishery and Aquaculture Products

The two-day virtual regional workshop on safety for fishery and aquaculture products will be organized under the project “Capacity Building for Sustainable Fisheries and Aquaculture Management in Central Asia, Azerbaijan and Turkey (FISHCap) (GCP/SEC/013/TUR)” implemented under the FAO-Turkey Partnership Programme on Food and Agriculture (FTPP II).
The aim of workshop is threefold:
- Contribute to strengthening the institutional capacity of food safety and quality control for fishery and aquaculture products in Central Asia and the Caucasus region;
- Provide the participants with the basics of sampling methods, laboratory management, and accreditation processes of food control laboratories, and
- Analyze institutional capacity for safety for fishery and aquaculture products in the region.
The target audience of the virtual workshop includes government staff, decision-makers in fisheries and aquaculture management, academics and researchers, as well as fish farmers and representatives of fishers/fish farmers organizations. Up to ten participants from each beneficiary country (Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkey, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan) will participate in the workshop together with experts from FAO and from the region..
Prior to the workshop, a survey questionnaire will be conducted to describe opportunities and constraints for the countries to draw a frame about the current situation and regulations on seafood safety quality assurance, analysis, and quality control.
About the FAO-Turkey Partnership Programme on Food and Agriculture
Established in 2006, the FAO-Turkey Partnership Programme on Food and Agriculture (FTPP) focuses on achieving food security and combating rural poverty in Central Asian and Caucasus countries through projects at the national, multi-country and subregional level.
To date, the programme has supported countries in the areas of food security, food safety, rural development, natural resources management, and animal and plant genetic resources. The Government of Turkey has contributed USD 20 million to the programme and committed itself to the second phase.
