Regional workshop on fish health management and fish diseases
Hybrid Event, 20/12/2021 - 22/12/2021
Diseases can pose a great threat to aquaculture, while infectious diseases have become one of the primary limiting factors for the success and profitability of fish farming. Fish health problems and diseases commonly occur in intensive and semi-intensive culture production systems. Additionally, fish farms spread diseases and parasites to wild fish populations. Infectious disease outbreaks cause significant economic losses in the farming of varying commercial fish species at local, national, regional, and global levels. However, the Central Asia and Caucasus region often lacks capacity, data, and documentation on the occurrence and spatial distribution of disease outbreaks and aquatic animal health management.
Reacting to this need, FAO is organizing a regional workshop on fish health management and fish diseases on 20-22 December 2021 in Antalya, Türkiye, as part of the project “Capacity development for sustainable fisheries and aquaculture management in Central Asia, Azerbaijan, and Turkey” implemented under the FAO–Türkiye Partnership Programme on Food and Agriculture.
Participants include representatives of ministries responsible for fish health issues, researchers working on fish diseases, and managers of fish farms from Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Türkiye, and Uzbekistan. They will learn about:
- the basics of fish health management;
- common diseases of cultured fish;
- methodologies to diagnose these diseases; and
- treatment of fish diseases.
