Education course for students GMO/LMO risk assessment under the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety

Bishkek (Kyrgyzstan), Hybrid Event, 12/11/2024

The introduction of educational curricula on genetically modified organisms (GMO) or living modified organism (LMO) issues in the education system aims to equip students with a balanced understanding of biotechnology, genetics, and the social-economic considerations of GMOs.

A genetically modified organism, otherwise referred to as a living modified organism, is understood to mean any living organism that possesses a novel combination of genetic material obtained through the use of modern biotechnology.

By including GMO topics in science related studies, students can critically evaluate the benefits, risks, and regulatory challenges associated with GMOs, fostering informed opinions and responsible decision-making in future generations. This curriculum addition emphasizes interdisciplinary learning, combining biology, ethics, and environmental science to address global food security, agricultural sustainability, and public health.
