Inception workshop: Enhanced strategic framework for Montenegro’s Agriculture, Forestry and Other Land Use sectors

Podgorica (Montenegro), 09/05/2025

Thee Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and Montenegro’s Ministry of Ecology, Sustainable Development and Northern Region Development will launch a new project from the country to enhance the strategic frameworks for the Agriculture, Forestry and Other Land Use (AFOLU) sectors and to develop the 2nd National Forestry Inventory. The project is funded by the Green Climate Fund (GCF).

The initiative marks an important milestone for Montenegro in its efforts to strengthen national systems and capacities in addressing climate change in alignment with national priorities and Green Climate Fund commitments. The project was developed to address several readiness and capacity-building needs identified in the draft GCF Country Programme (2025) and supports Montenegro’s climate ambitions and actions, particularly in the Agriculture, Forestry and Other Land Use sectors. By enhancing cooperation across institutions and sectors, and improving national data and reporting systems, the project aims to integrate the food and agriculture sector into national climate strategies and increase Montenegro’s preparedness for future GCF programming and climate-related investment.

Opening remarks:

  • Damjan Culafic, Minister for Ecology, Sustainable Development and Northern Region Development
  • Nabil Gangi, FAO Deputy Regional Representative for Europe and Central Asia
