Online training: Application of the Regional Guidelines – Value Chain Development and Market Access for Non-Wood Forest Products

Virtual Event, 25/09/2025

Non-wood forest products (NWFPs) play a vital role in the livelihoods of rural communities across Southeastern Europe, Central Asia, and the Caucasus. These products – including medicinal and aromatic plants, mushrooms, nuts, and other non-timber goods – contribute significantly to household incomes, food security, and the preservation of traditional knowledge. However, many of these products are currently harvested and marketed in ways that limit their potential to create sustainable economic benefits.

Recognizing the need to improve value chain development and market access for NWFPs, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has partnered with the Chamber of Forest Engineers of Türkiye to develop and implement the Regional Guidelines – Value Chain Development and Market Access for Non-Wood Forest Products in Southeastern Europe, Central Asia, and the Caucasus to support sustainable forest management and rural development in this area.

A virtual training on 25 September 2025 should introduce participants to the application of the Guidelines and equip them with practical tools for implementation in their respective countries. This shall ultimately enhance sustainable forest management, promote rural development, and unlock the economic potential of non-wood forest products across Southeastern Europe, Central Asia, and the Caucasus. Additionally, it should provide a platform for sharing regional and global best practices, including lessons learned from five case studies that highlight successful NWFP value chain models, as well as strengthen knowledge and technical skills to draft and implement policies, strategies, and facilitate regional cooperation and exchange of experiences.
